A Brightlingsea man is climbing the equivalent of Britain’s tallest mountains indoors to raise money for Breast Cancer UK.
In order to complete his lockdown Three Peaks Challenge, John Paxman has been climbing the stairs in his house – something he’ll have to do 1,380 times in order to have ‘climbed’ the combined 3,408m height of Snowdon, Scafell Pike and Ben Nevis.
With John’s wife, Helen – who’s currently being treated for breast cancer – acting as coach, John has made the halfway point after eight days and raised over £1,600 for the cancer charity. “Having a dodgy hip and being there for Helen I have allowed myself a month,” said John, “mainly because I am unfit and I don’t want to upset my neighbours –who are lovely!”
John added: “Using social media as I go, I am encouraging people to share their stories and to highlight the importance of being aware of our bodies and getting changes checked. You might just be saving a life!”
