Colne Radio, the community radio station for North East Essex, will be coming to town to offer local residents the opportunity to learn all about making radio.
Funding awarded from the National Lottery Community Fund means the Finding Your Voice sessions – part of Brightlingsea WinterFest – on February 22 at Brightlingsea Community Centre will be free to attend for all.
The taster sessions run from 10am to 3pm with Colne Radio trainers and cover topics including podcasting; recording, editing and interviewing techniques; making jingles and promos; reading the news; presenting and making radio features.
Residents can pop in to try out the mini-taster sessions, meet the team and find out how Colne Radio make radio and the airwaves more accessible for a wider group of people from diverse backgrounds.
People who attend on the day will be invited to take part in a free short course in the spring aimed at developing their confidence, communication skills and key broadcasting techniques, and creating special radio features which Colne Radio can then broadcast to the public.
The three-year Finding Your Voice project launched last year with the courses being offered to community groups and individuals in Tendring and Colchester whose voices and stories are seldom heard or championed within the region.
Will Bixby, project manager for Colne Radio explained: “We are keen to meet residents who would like to develop new skills and take the opportunity to meet new friends. We recently delivered a three-day course for WinterFest volunteers, none of whom had any knowledge about making radio. They told us that they found it really beneficial and would recommend it to others.”
The results of the WinterFest course can be heard at https://www.mixcloud.com/ColneRadio/finding- your-voice-winterfest and it is also available to listen to on Colne Radio’s website at https://colneradio.net/listen-again.
