Deputy’s Gift Fund ensures there’s no need to be alone on Christmas Day

Brightlingsea residents who may be on their own on Christmas Day are once again invited to enjoy Christmas lunch courtesy of the Cinque Port Liberty of Brightlingsea.

The lunch, held in Brightlingsea Sailing Club, offers the chance to socialise, listen to the King’s Speech and enjoy some live entertainment – with transport to and from the venue for those unable to make their own way. For anyone unable to travel at all a Christmas meal can be delivered.

The event will be one of the first public outings for the newly elected Deputy and Lady Deputy, who will be announced on Choosing Day at All Saints’ Church on December 1.

Last Christmas over 80 people sat down to the meal, paid for by the Deputy’s gift fund, which dates back to the late nineteenth century, when it supported the widows and orphans of fishermen, Among those preparing the meal are members of the Canham family, who have been involved for over 50 years.

The Liberty will have a stall in the town on Friday, December 5, for the Late Night shopping event, selling raffle tickets to raise funds for the lunch, and summer afternoon tea, with a Christmas hamper as the prize. Tickets are also available in Little Boat Gifts.

To find our more about attending the lunch, email [email protected] or call Sharon on 07789 930072. Anyone who would like to sponsor the lunch should contact the Gift Fund secretary.
