Library bosses have confirmed that visitors to Brightlingsea library can use its toilet facilities in “exceptional circumstances.”

Visitors – including those at events with toddlers or people with dementia – were told by staff that they had been instructed not to allow public use of the toilet,  which can only be accessed via the library office.

Many visitors took to social media to complain that the move left them facing a five minute walk from the New Street branch to the public toilets in Station Road.

However, following enquiries by Brightlingsea Info, a spokesperson for Essex County Council said there had been no ban, stating: “Due to increasing demand from non-library users we have had to limit access to these facilities unless there is an immediate welfare, dignity or accessibility need.

“This is because the facilities were never intended for customer use and are within restricted areas which may not be suitable for the public, passing through staff offices. However, in exceptional circumstances staff can accompany members of the public to these facilities, provided proper security is followed.”

The spokesperson added: “Essex Libraries remains committed to meeting its obligations under the Equality Act 2010. Reasonable adjustments will continue to be considered where needed, and staff will always take a proportionate and customer-focused approach when responding to individual needs.”
