Tendring District now has the third highest number of Covid-19 cases per 100,000 population in the county, according to the latest government figures – with cases in Brightlingsea well above the national average.
In the week to January 13, cases in the district leapt to 1,264 per 100,000 from the 844 recorded the week before, while the total number of cases rose by just over 17% to 1656. Over the same period, 39 people in the district were recorded as dying within 28 days of a positive Covid-19 test, up from 21 the week before. The vast majority of those infected were aged 59 and below and around 36 or more people with Covid-19 were admitted to hospital every day in the East Suffolk and North Essex healthcare area.
In the Brightlingsea and Point Clear area over the week to January, 81 positive cases were recorded, with the rate for the week to January 8 put at over 960 per 100,000 – well above the average for England of 655. Across the East of England healthcare region, the R number is now running at between 1.1 and 1.3 – meaning that on average, every 10 people infected will infect between 11 and 13 other people.
The increase in cases comes as the rollout of the vaccination programme the over-80s gathers pace, with Brightlingsea residents residents receiving jabs at the Primary Care Centre in Colchester or the St Helena Tendring Centre in Jackson Road, Clacton. Tendring Council has also opened a community testing site at Clacton Leisure Centre in Valley Road, where asymptomatic residents can pick up a testing kit. Within two days of opening on January 11, around 4,000 of the initial 5,000 home-testing kits had been taken, and more than 600 returned for analysis.
People who’ve used the kits will be notified by Test and Trace of the results and Tendring council has released a video showing the procedure for collecting and using a kit, which can be seen here. More details can be found on the council’s website.
