Ted Gilders, a driving force behind the Brightlingsea In Bloom initiative that has filled the town with floral displays, died peacefully in his sleep on January 24 aged 93.
Ted became the main fundraiser for the community group at the age of 63, a role he embraced for three decades. Through tireless dedication, good humour, and an unshakeable belief in the town’s potential, he raised over £400,000.
His efforts transformed Brightlingsea’s floral displays and community spaces, earning him a special award from Britain in Bloom, presented by Alan Titchmarsh — a moment he cherished.
Born and raised in the town – with family links dating back to the 1700s – Ted left school at 14 and began working locally before undertaking his National Service in Chatham. After two years away, he returned home to work alongside his father.
A talented and passionate cricketer, Ted played for both Brightlingsea and West Bergholt Cricket Clubs, captaining Brightlingsea’s First XI for many years. His leadership, sportsmanship, and love for the game made him a respected figure on and off the field. In later years he captained the Second XI before finally hanging up his bat. Retirement from cricket saw him take up bowls, playing for Brightlingsea Bowls Club well into his late eighties.
While playing for Brightlingsea, he was approached by Romford Cricket Club and moved to the area for a short time. There he met Valerie, his wife for 68 years and, on moving back to Brightlingsea, the couple established the Home Spun shop on Brightlingsea High Street.
Ted was an active member of the Round Table, Rotary Club, and Lions Club, and he served on the Town Council for four years. He was a Freeman of the Cinque Port Liberty of Brightlingsea, and was Deputy for two years.
He is survived by Valerie and children Gary and Karen three grandchildren and one great-grandson. Details of a memorial service and cremation are yet to be confirmed.
A memorial service will be at St James Church, Brightlingsea at 2pm on Thursday, March. 5 There will be a private cremation after. Donations to Brightlingsea In Bloom via: https://tedgilders.muchloved.com
