Tendring now has more people aged over 65 than ever before, the 2021 Census has revealed.
The latest figures also show that the population of England and Wales on Census Day – March 21, 2021 – was the largest ever recorded at nearly 59.6 million, up 3.5 million in the 10 years from the previous census.

The census reveals Tendring’s population is ageing
There has been an increase of 17.8% in people aged 65 years and over, an increase of 3.2% in people aged 15 to 64 years, and an increase of 5.1% in children aged under 15 years. Milton Keynes has seen the biggest incureas of over 65s – 43.6%
In Tendring, the population size has increased by 7.3%, from around 138,000 in 2011 to 148,100 in 2021. This is higher than the 6.6% increase for England.
In contrast, Colchester seen its population increase by around 11.3%. North Norfolk has seen an increase of just 1.5%.
Tendring is in the region with the highest population growth. the East of England’s population increased by 8.3% from 2011 – a gain of approximately 488,000 residents.
