Blocked: Main B1029 Brightlingsea Road at a standstill after wide load hits tree

The main B1029 in and out of Brightlingsea was at a standstill this evening after a demountable building came off a truck after hitting a tree.

The collision occurred on Church Hill at around 4pm as the large flatbed truck was heading into Brightlingsea with what’s understood to be demountable for the Colne Community School. The impact pushed the load off the flatbed, so that it’s now resting partly on the road. It’s understood that no-one was hurt and police are on the scene.

A crane is understood to be on the way, but with traffic backed up in both directions, it’s likely to be some time until the load can be moved and the road cleared. First bus has said services will terminate at Thorrington and some passengers had abandoned the bus and walked in to Brightlingsea. Some people heading into town had abandoned cars and left buses on the Brightlingsea Road and were walking in to town, with others walking towards Thorrington.

UPDATE 18.40: Traffic now flowing out of Brightlingsea.

UPDATE 2: It’s understood that the truck, which was preceded by an escort vehicle, was forced to swerve to avoid a car coming in the opposite direction.
