Brightlingsea has been left shocked and saddened by the sudden death of a long-serving and much-loved teacher at Brightlingsea Primary School and Nursery – just days before the end of term.
Year three teacher Katherine Pedder died during her lunch break at the Eastern Road school on Friday, July 18. First aiders and medics attended, but despite what the school’s head, Laura Khine, called “heroic efforts”, they were unable to save her.
In an email to parents, Mrs Khine said that Mrs Pedders’s family were “able to be with her in her last moments”.
“We are heartbroken,” wrote Mrs Khine. “Katherine had taught at the school for many years and leaves behind friends and colleagues, who will miss her greatly.”
She added: “As a school will we remember her as a much loved teacher with a huge heart, an infectious smile and a real love for music. Her life was truly lived to the full and one which we all feel blessed to have been a part of.”
Parents and former pupils, have taken to social media to share their appreciation of Mrs Pedder. Some of dozens of comments included: ‘A fantastic teacher who worked hard to meet the needs of her students, with that added sparkle’; ‘…a remarkable lady who the children loved and adored’; ‘ …a truly inspiring teacher’; ‘You always put your children first and you did it in a fun, caring and nurturing way’.
Fondly remembered was her love of music, school discos and enthusiasm for dressing up days.
Many in the town have left flowers on the school lawn in Mrs Pedder’s memory and a book of concolence has been opened in the school hall. A candle lighting and prayer space has been set up in St James’ church in her memory.
“It’s an opportunity to come in and light a candle or write a prayer for her, for her family and for our primary school where she taught for so many years,” said curate Judith Gibbons. “Everyone is welcome, especially the children, parents, and staff.”
The school has sent support materials for parents to use with their children, and has pointed to advice and resources available online at www.childbereavement.org.uk.
The staff at Brightlingsea Tesco offered a free flower for children in memory of Mrs Pedder
