Waterlogged areas at Pawson’s playground on Brightlingsea Prom should be a thing of the past once work to install a new safe-play surface has been completed.
The work – costing around £44,000 – will see an all-weather rubberised surface fitted over the whole of the playground area, covering areas of grass that often turn muddy after wet weather and have to be cordoned off.

The funding has come from Section 106 monies collected from developers carrying out building projects in the town. Developers – who are required by planning rules to make a contribution towards local amenities or infrastructure – can specify where the money goes, and in this case selected the playground. The funds are paid to Tendring District Council and had to be requested by Brightlingsea Town Council, which owns the play area.
Depending on the weather, the work is expected to be completed by early February. Following that, a new piece of sensory play equipment – a ship’s steering wheel – will be installed. The wheel – pictured right – makes sounds as it’s turned and is designed especially for children with sight problems.
In another development, Brightlingsea Town Council is gathering quotes from builders to renovate the delapidated brick shelter on the seafront – pictured below – close to the Lido and boating lake.
