Council merger plan recommendation to be discussed

A proposal to merge Tendring District Council (TDC) with Colchester and Braintree councils under local government reorganisation is to be discussed this week.

TDC’s leader, Cllr Mark Stephenson, will recommend that the council’s cabinet supports proposals to form a new North-East Essex unitary authority at a meeting on Friday, September 12.

Under the government’s Local Government Reorganisation programme, elections will take place for an Essex mayor, with district and unitary authorities being merged to form three or four new unitary authorities. Essex County Council would be abolished, and the new bodies would take on current district and county council responsibilities.

A video explaining what the moves could mean for Tendring can be seen below. For further information on local government reorganisation, click here.
