
The outstanding achievements of three young people from Brightlingsea have been recognised with citations in the 2025 Tendring Youth Awards.
Vee Matthews, Sam Smith and Sophie-Megan Edwards were runners up in the Arts category of the awards, which aim to spotlight the district’s most inspiring young people. All attended a gala evening in Clacton’s Princes Theatre on Tuesday, July 1.
Sam and Sophie-Megan took on the ambitious challenge of directing Brightlingsea Musical Theatre Group’s 2024 production of Sweeney Todd. “Their inspiring vision and tireless commitment led to a stunning performance that earned them the Best Direction award at the North Essex Theatre Guild Awards,” said the award organisers. “Their leadership, enthusiasm, and talent shone through every step of the way.”
Vee has been a dedicated volunteer for several years, leading engaging Dungeons & Dragons sessions for younger players at the Brightlingsea Gamers’ Guild. In addition to their work with the Guild, Vee also supports local events including the Brightlingsea Music Festival and Cricket Club. His citation read: “Their efforts have created meaningful opportunities for young people to connect, collaborate, and grow through shared interests and community spirit.”
Karen O’Connor, Chairwoman of the Tendring Youth Awards, praised this year’s nominees and winners for their dedication and impact. “Each year, we’re amazed by the incredible young people and supportive adults who make a difference across Tendring – and this year was no exception,” she said.
“Our finalists are truly inspiring, and every nominee deserves recognition for their outstanding contributions. They are role models for our community, and we’re so proud of everything they’ve achieved.”
