A talk by Brightlingsea Museum curator Margaret Stone about the town during WWII will give a financial boost to young residents.

Entitled “80 years on’ – Brightlingsea in WWII” the talk – on Friday May 9 at 7.30pm at the Colne Yacht Club – will raise money for The Edward Sycamore Brightlingsea Fund, which provides grants of up to £150 for young people who may need financial help with studies, apprenticeships, vocational courses or equipment.

One previous recipient commented: “I received support when I did an expedition with my school to Arctic Russia, between A levels and going to university.”

Another said: “The trust supported me with a grant when I joined the National Youth Theatre and needed to raise the funds for accommodation and accessing the training.”

The trustees – who have local and educational expertise – require written applications stating name, age and address, together an explanation of why the grant is needed, what the applicant hopes to do and where they will be studying. Applicants must be Brightlingsea residents.

Applications can be emailed to [email protected] or delivered to Edward Sycamore Fund, 16 Regent Road, Brightlingsea CO7 0NL. The closing date for applications is Wednesday 3 September 2025.

Tickets for the talk cost £14.50, including a simple buffet supper, and can be reserved via telephone on 07899 776620 or by emailing [email protected].There will be a simple buffet supper, a raffle and a licenced bar
