Breakwaters on Brightlingsea promenade get some much-needed repairs

Repaired breakwaters off Brightlingsea's paddling pool

Damaged and delapidated breakwaters along Brightlingsea promenade have had some much-needed repairs carried out by Tendring District Council engineers.

The poor state of the breakwaters – or groynes – has been raised by members of the public at several meetings of Brightlingsea Town Council (BTC).

Last week (September 18) one resident told councillors at a full council meeting that one breakwater had deteriorated to the point where it was just broken bits of wood sticking out of the water, posing a danger to swimmers.

But this week some planks have been replaced on groynes on the beach in front of the paddling pool and between the Lido and Brightlingsea Sailing Club. Some others still require work, notably on the beach on the upriver side of Bateman’s Tower – pictured  below.

At the BTC meeting, Cllr John Carr said that there had been some “ping-pong” between the Environment Agency and TDC when it came to repairs. However, given that TDC staff have carried out the current repairs, responsibility would appear to lie with the district authority.

• Enquiries by Brightlingsea Info have revealed an email address for reporting damaged sea defences to TDC. Report issues via [email protected].
