Essex Police is looking to recruit Community Special Constables in Brightlingsea as part of a county-wide drive to see a volunteer officer in every community.
Community specials are a new initiative. They will concentrate on their towns or villages – unlike existing specials, who are volunteers who work with regular officers across the county.
Another difference will be that local councils will pay the allowances and expenses of their officers – and councils will have a say in the issues that their local specials, who’ll be expected to attend council meetings, deal with.
Like existing specials, they’ll be unpaid volunteers, with the same police powers, uniforms and equipment as regular police officers.
In its recruitment literature, Essex Police said: “You probably care most about the places where you walk, cycle or drive; where you exercise the dog, go for a jog, let your kids out to play or where you pop to the shops. You might have thought that you don’t see enough “Bobbies on the Beat” in these places? Well, why don’t you volunteer as a Community Special Constable and be that bobby?”
