As it heads towards its second year of helping local stroke survivors, Brightlingsea Stroke Support Services (BSSS) is going from strength to strength.
This week the group, a hub of the Tendring Specialist Stroke Services (TSSS) charity, held a Christmas lunch in Brightlingsea Regent Football Club for the 30 or so people it supports, along with family and friends.
A cheque for £2,000 was presented to the group by immediate past Deputy of the Cinque Port Liberty of Brightlingsea, Stever Archer – part of the money raised during his year in office. Town Mayor John Carr handed over a donation of £255 after pledging to support the group when he was elected in May 2024. Funds have also been raised by pubs, clubs, sports teams and other organisations in the town.
Organiser Mark Wilby explained that the BSSS offers a variety of rehabilitation support to those who have had a stroke, as well as offering advice and help to partners.
The weekly sessions might see users – whose ages range from 30 to over 80 – having physiotherapy and one-to-one counselling sessions, and taking part in activities including knitting, playing board games, quizzes and generally socialising. Swimming sessions at the pool in Jethen House, Brightlingsea are also offered.
