Two people in their sixties have been arrested in Brightlingsea following the discovery of a cannabis farm.

Officers from Tendring Neighbourhood Policing Team entered a property on Church Road with a warrant on Thursday February 19.

Inside, they found almost 50 cannabis plants worth at least £25,000 growing under several large lamps installed on the ceiling. The property’s electricity meter had been by-passed and the plants were seized.

A man aged 67 and a woman aged 61 were arrested on suspicion of cannabis cultivation, being concerned in the supply of a controlled drug and abstracting electricity. They were later released under investigation.

Sergeant Wendy Crowson, of Tendring Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “The supply of any illicit drug is not a harmless crime, and we will work determinedly to tackle it.”

In June 2025, between 750 and 1,000 cannabis plants were discovered growing in the former Hotel Heidi on Church Road.
