The Essex Police Marine Unit has begun on-water shoreline patrols around the Tendring coastline, looking to prevent crime and anti-social activity.

On Sunday, May 8, the unit’s rigid inflatable, Sentinel, was out on the River Colne and attended Brightlingsea Coastal Rowing Club’s Gig Fest event, which saw 18 boats rowing a seven-mile course in the estuary. The boat also visited St Osyth, Wivenhoe, Rowhedge, Mersea, and Bradwell.

In the preceding week, officers carried out shore patrols around marinas and boatyards as part of the national Project Kraken initiative, which aims to combat and prevent marine-related crime, including theft, criminal damage, and the smuggling of prohibited items.

Suspicious activity along the coastline, or information that might prevent marine crime, can be passed on to the National Marine Crime Line at 0800 011 3304 – a confidential service operated by the charity Crimestoppers.
