Outstanding performances in two Brightlingsea productions have seen local amateur actors win in the annual North Essex Theatre Guild awards, held recently at Clacton’s Princes Theatre.

Eliza Cole took the lead role in Bright Stars Youth Theatre’s production of Matilda Jr and won the award for Best Young Actress, one of six awards the group were nominated for.

Just 12 years-old when she took to the Brightlingsea Community Centre stage in September 2024, Eliza was described as “the perfect Matilda” by Bright Stars’ principal, Gabrielle Tyler.

“She followed every direction she was given and was an absolute joy to work with,” said Ms Tyler. “She is such a kind hearted girl and we are so happy for her to have won the very well deserved award from NETG. She is definitely one to watch for the future.”

Brightlingsea Musical Theatre Group won the Adjudicators’ Award for the concept, presentation and performance of Audrey 2 in its production of Little Shop of Horrors – a scene from which is below. The group’s Jake Scales was nominated for best actor for his performance as Seymour Krelbor and Joe Fusi for best supporting actor as Orin Scrivello.
