Brightlingsea’s very own superstar, Sam Ryder, is to make his West End and theatre debut with the lead role in a revival of the smash-hit musical Jesus Christ Superstar.
Sam, who shot to fame with his performance of Space Man at the 2022 Eurovision contest, will headline an 11-week run of the Tim Rice & Andrew Lloyd Webber show at the London Palladium, starting in June 2026.
Sam, who has a home in Brightlingsea, said: “I’m so excited to be part of one of the biggest institutions in musical theatre the world’s ever known, at the London Palladium in the West End!
“I’m honoured to take on this responsibility as I follow in the footsteps of rock vocal titans like Ian Gillan and John Farnham. I can’t wait to immerse myself in the world of Jesus Christ Superstar in 2026.”
Producer Michael Harrison added: “In Sam we have a true superstar to play the iconic title role.”
Since his Eurovision appearance, Sam has gained BRIT and Emmy nominations and recorded a No. 1 album and a No. 2 single. His music has been streamed billions of times and he has over 20m followers on social media. Most recently, he performed Go Steady at Festival of Remembrance in the Albert Hall.
The show will be a revival of the 2016 Olivier Award-winning production performed at the Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre. Originally released as a concept album, Jesus Christ Superstar opened on Broadway in 1971. The original London production ran for over eight years and 3,358 performances – the longest-running musical in West End history at the time.
