Support for stroke survivors in Brightlingsea has been secured for the second year running thanks to the fundraising efforts of the Cinque Port Liberty of Brightlingsea.
Brightlingsea Stroke Support Services was the chosen charity of last year’s Deputy and Lady Deputy, Rob and Suzie White and this week a cheque for just over £12,000 was handed to the group.
Meeting weekly at Brightlingsea Regent Football club, the group offers physiotherapy, counselling, medical, welfare, mobility and other support – along with the chance to socialise over a cup of tea – to around 20 people who’ve been affected by strokes to varying degrees.
The Liberty donated a similar sum to help the group – a hub of the Tendring Specialist Stroke Services (TSSS) charity – get off the ground last year. Support from other organisations and individuals in the town has meant that the group has been able to purchase exercise and mobility equipment, and fund hydrotherapy and gym sessions.
TSSS stroke nurse Duncan Heddell explained that the social interaction offered is important and helps survivors and their partners realise that they are not alone in dealing with the issues caused by a stroke.
“People are usually pretty nervous when they come through the door,” he said, “sometimes just a few weeks after leaving hospital.”
Mr Heddell explained that a stroke can’t be cured, as a part of the brain has died, but survivors are helped to come to terms with their condition and mitigate the effects.
“Everybody’s stroke is different,” added Mr Heddell. “We offer a degree of rehabilitation. Often it’s the smaller things, but I’m sure it’s of use.”
