Take part in the first Brightlingsea Virtual Open Gardens

Show us your garden and help support St Helena Hospice

Brightlingsea's Open Gardens event is one of the highlights of the summer. Last year green-fingered townsfolk opened 37 gardens to visitors far and wide – raising thousands of pounds for St Helena.
Sadly, social distancing rules have forced the cancellation of this year's event. But with many people spending more time than ever in their gardens, we thought it would be a shame not to show off their efforts. That's why Brightlingsea Info is pleased to have teamed up with the Brightlingsea Hospice Support Group to launch Virtual Open Gardens 2020 and to help support St Helena.

About St Helena

St Helena helps local people facing incurable illness and bereavement. We provide expert care and support to people living in North Essex at The Hospice and through our Hospice in the Home services, as well as providing a wide range of day therapy services through our centres in Colchester and Clacton. Our 24/7 SinglePoint Service coordinates care across a range of local providers and hosts the My Care Choices Register. We support families, including children, pre and post bereavement.

How to take part

All you have to do is take up to five pictures of your garden and send them to us. Then add a description of your garden. You could tell us about the work you've done, your favourite plant, what your garden means to you - whatever you want. If your garden isn't perfect, it doesn't matter – just snap the good bits! And if you feel like giving us a guided tour, create a video for our Virtual Open Gardens YouTube channel.

Children can get involved too with the Dandy the Lion colouring sheet. Just download a copy, colour it in, take a picture of it, send it back to us and we'll add it to the site. You can download a copy by clicking here.

Open Gardens 2020 was due to take place over the weekend of June 27 & 28 - and that's when we'll be unveiling the entries to our virtual event. Entry is free, but we'd really appreciate a donation for the Hospice. Like many charities, St Helena's fundraising has been hit hard because of the virus – and many Brightlingsea residents have had cause to be grateful for the caring work that the Hospice does.

Entries close on Thursday, June 25 and Virtual Open Gardens will open at 10 am on June 27. So what are you waiting for? Get snapping!

Make a video. Email us on [email protected] and we'll give you instructions on how to get it to us.
If you know someone who would like to take part but doesn't have access to a digital camera, call 01206 304551 and we can arrange for someone to call and take a socially-distanced photo/video.
