Two-storey garage and office planned for Tower Street garden

A plan to build a two-storey garage and studio workshop in the back garden of a house in Tower Street has been submitted to Tendring District Council.

The building in the garden of 115 Tower Street would front Lime Street and if approved would provide a "multi-faceted working space" with rooms set our for "specific specialist creative activities", according to a design and access statement drawn up by Brightlingsea-based Hancock Architecture for Karen Cooke.

Drawings submitted to the council show a 5.3m high building clad in corrugated steel sheet and larch, designed to resemble "historic Essex fishing huts". A double garage on the ground floor would be accessed from Lime Street, with large bi-fold doors leading on to a patio area at the end facing the house and garden.

A balcony under an oversailing roof "seeks to provide an al-fresco dining and sitting area" with a shower room and office accommodation on the first floor. Low energy heating and lighting is planned to minimise the building's carbon footprint.

The application cites another detached building in Lime Street in the garden of 73 Tower Street  as a precedent. Another large garage on land that has been turned into an ornamental garden in Lime Street is also under consideration by council planners. The plans can be viewed here.
