A proposal to repair part of Jacobs Hall in Brightlingsea High Street with “traditional and sympathetic” materials has been submitted to Tendring District Council (TDC).
According to documents submitted with the plan, the west gable of the Grade I Listed building needs repairs to “prevent future degredation and restore its rightful appearance”. The project will require what’s said to be an incorrect slurry mix to be scrubbed away to show the definition between the panels and timbers, before being repaired with green oak and lime render.
Jacobs Hall is one of the oldest houses in the country. Historic England says it was first recorded in 1315 and in the 15th century it was owned by Beriffe family, wealthy shipping merchants who are depicted on brasses in All Saints’ Church.
