All Saints' Church in 1940 – now new additions are planned

Updated: Survey looks for views on All Saints' church extension plans

The Friends of All Saints' plans for renovating the tower at All Saints' church and adding an extension containing a toilet and kitchen are progressing – and now Brightlingsea residents are being asked for their views via a survey.

Grants from organisations including the National Lottery Heritage Fund and AllchurchesTrust are helping to fund what the Friends say is an "ambitious project to preserve, enhance and share the heritage of the church and churchyard with the wider community". The group adds: "As a landmark building, which every visitor to the town passes, the church represents home-coming and safety to today’s townspeople as much as it did in the past when riding-lights were lit on the Tower to guide sailors to safe harbour."

The plans include building an an equal-access indoor toilet and small kitchenette on the north side of the church, and making the tower safe and fit for wider use. The Friends say the renovations will allow more cultural, musical, educational and community events to take place, making the most of the church's maritime links and the large churchyard outside.

Update: The high number of responses to the survey meant that it hit the maximum number of replies allowed – a second version allowing for more responses can be found here.
