Waste can collections helping to crush cancer

Just some of the cans that have been collected

A Brightlingsea mother and and daughter have raised thousands of pounds for Cancer Research by collecting nearly four tons of aluminium cans.

Cans for Cancer, set up Hannah and mum Jo Woodiwiss, and helped by a Relay for Life team (pictured below) of family and friends, raised £4,600 in 2022 and has already raised over £1,000 this year.

The idea came about after Jo was treated for breast cancer. “We wanted to a new way to raise money without having to ask people for donations,” said Hannah.

“We ask people to save their aluminium drink cans fortnightly, we then collect them, crush them and take them to the local recycling centre in Brightlingsea. They give us money per kg and 100% of all money raised  goes straight to Cancer Research UK.

If you’d like to add to the can collection (crushed, please), the team can be contacted through Facebook –Cans for Cancer – Relay for Life – by text via 07840 160443, or email on [email protected]
