The waters off Brightlingsea will be buzzing from Sunday (August 7) when 120-plus sailors in over 30 yachts compete to become the Sonata class national champions.
The event – hosted by the Colne Yacht Club and sponsored by Morgan Marine – has attracted entrants hoping to win the Pimms Trophy from as far away as Scotland for a scheduled 12 races over four days and a busy programme of social events. After racing the boats will be moored in Brightlingsea harbour.
The 6.9m-long Sonata races with a crew of four and over the last few years a strong fleet has developed in Brightlingsea. The club uses three of the yachts for sail training and over a dozen boats have been seen racing in a hotly-contested Wednesday evening competition over the summer.
During the event the club will be raising awareness for the charity Kids Inspire, which offers specialist support for children, young people and their families – some of whom will enjoy a sailing trip courtesy of the Brightlingsea-based Pioneer Trust.
