Pandemic forces Clacton Airshow cancellation

This year’s Clacton Airshow has been cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic – but organiser Tendring District Council (TDC) is planning for its return in 2021.

Since it began 28 years ago, the two-day August show has become the biggest public event in Essex. It has attracted up to 250,000 spectators who make a huge contribution to the local economy.

Alex Porter, TDC portfolio holder for leisure and tourism, said the decision to cancel was disappointing but correct. “Although lockdown restrictions have recently started to be eased, there is no possible way to maintain social distancing with more than 200,000 visitors gathering along our seafront,” he said. “We recognise that lockdown restrictions may change further in the coming months, but under the published recovery plan it does not look likely we would be able to go ahead.”

The council is now planning for the return of the show next year on August 26 and 27.
