Maternity and COVID-19 - virtual event set to answer questions

A virtual event will enable pregnant women or new mothers to quiz local health experts with questions about the COVID-19 vaccine and any concerns that they may have relating to the vaccine and fertility, pregnancy and breastfeeding.

The event, being hosted the Maternity Voices Partnership in partnership with the Suffolk and North East Essex Integrated Care System (ICS), is being held on Friday April 23 at 12 noon. Anyone who is planning conception, is pregnant or is a new mother is encouraged to join this free virtual event.

Panel members will include experienced midwife Teri Gavin Jones, ICS director of nursing Lisa Nobes, Danny Showell from Public Health England and GP Dr Juno Jesuthasan.

Lisa Nobes, ICS director of nursing, said: “Although pregnant women are at no greater risk of being infected by the virus they are more likely to experience complications from COVID 19. Data shows that one in five pregnant women who become infected need to have their baby delivered early.

“Vaccination offers the best protection, but it is wholly understandable that pregnant women may have concerns for their unborn baby. Those who are planning pregnancy may have questions about whether the vaccine will affect their ability to conceive and new mothers may wish to discuss the effects of vaccination on breastfeeding. The panel experts have decades of maternity experience and will be happy to answer any questions or concerns.”
