Local groups sing to support Ukraine

Two groups of Brightlingsea singers will be using their voices to raise funds to support the people of Ukraine and the hundreds of thousands who’ve fled their country after the Russian invasion.

This Saturday (March 6) from 10am shanty singers The Motley Crew will be performing in Brightlingsea town centre and on Sunday, March 13, singing teacher Alison Benz and her choir Women in Harmony will be holding a fundraising concert in St James’ Church at 5pm.

Money collected by the Motleys will be paid into the Disasters Emergency Committee Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal*, while the Women in Harmony concert will be helping the United Nations Refugee Agency charity, which has teams across Ukraine and in neighbouring countries hosting refugees and providing cash, protection, food, clothing and humanitarian assistance for displaced Ukrainians. On the day of the concert, the church will be open from 2.30-4pm to accept donations of warm clothing, shoes, blankets, toys, hygiene and sanitary supplies on behalf of a Polish charity with local links which is supporting the huge influx of Ukrainian refugees.

Tickets for the concert are available from Alison via text on 07941 023788 or on the door for a suggested minimum donation of £5 and there’ll be a cash collection at the end of the concert. Donations can also be made via Alison’s Facebook fundraising page ‘UK Singers for Ukraine’ at: https://www.facebook.com/donate/576569034124503/

• 15 UK charities are involved with the DEC appeal for Ukraine. The government has pledged to match donations pound-for-pound up to £20m.
