Rotary Club of Brightlingsea & District

The Rotary Club of Brightlingsea & District was formed in 1960 and has undertaken a wide range of activities to raise money to support local community charities and also global projects sponsored by Rotary International.

We raise money to support the community by staging events such as regular quizz nights, the famous Santa and his Sleigh which visits streets in Brightlingsea and surrounding villages throughout December and the popular Brightlingsea Jog Walk Run in aid of Essex Air Ambulance, which takes place each September.

We also support and help with community actvities and event such as the Brightlingsea Carnival and the Brightlingsea Town Show, where the Rotary Welly Wanging Competition is without doubt a legendary highlight.

Whilst focused on supporting our local community we do also provide financial support to a number of international projects such as the Porridge & Pens charity, which is run by a Brightlingsea based team and whose projects include the Brightlingsea Free School in Ghana, and Dental Mavericks who provide much needed free dental care to isolated communities in Morocco. We also support several of Rotary International’s projects including Purple for Polio, working to eradicate polio worldwide.

Local charities and community organisations can apply to us for grant support or assistance with fundraising activities and our team will always help where they can.

Q Is Rotary open to anyone?

Any adult who is keen to help and support their community is very welcome as a member of Rotary. The old image of Rotary as a club for gentlemen of a certain age is certainly not true of Brightlingsea. We are very much equal opportunity with approximately half the membership being female and we welcome members of any age (over 18).

Q What does Rotary do?

Brightlingsea & District focus on supporting charities and good causes in our local area. We do also support a small number of key international Rotary causes, such as the Purple for Polio campaign to eradicate polio worldwide and the Shelterbox scheme to provide urgent support for major international crises, but our main interest is to support our own community.

Q How do you raise funds?

We run a number of regular fundraising activities during the year including the famous Santa Sleigh Runs each December, the Brightlingsea Jog Walk Run each September, our ever popular Spring Quiz each May and the infamous Welly Wanging at the Town Show in August. We also undertake individual fundraising projects as needed.

Q How do you distribute your funds?

We have some regular partners in our fundraising activities, such as Essex Air Ambulance with the Jog Walk Run and organisations such as Brightlingsea in Bloom, Porridge & Pens, 4 Youth and several Parent Teacher Groups for local schools for the Santa Sleigh runs. In addition we receive individual requests from organisations and individuals who need financial support and do whatever we can to assist.

Q When do you meet?

We meet fortnightly on a Monday over supper and our meeting venues include local pubs and restaurants plus some members homes. In addition we periodically arrange activities such as archery, trips to the beach, bowling, vineyard visits, etc. We also have regular speakers evenings when representatives from a variety of local organisations share details of their work with us.

Q What will you want me to help with or do?

We try to take advantage of each member's strengths and experience. There are lots of different tasks to undertake associated with our fundraising activities and administering the club so we can find jobs to fit everyone. If you are IT savy we'll get you helping with the website and social media. If numbers or paperwork are your thing then we'll rope you into club and event admin. Perhaps you are happier doing practical things in which case anything from setting up stands for events to preparing and serving food, via helping maintain the sleigh and reindeer could be up your street. You let us know what you are good at and we'll figure it out together!
