FAQs

Q What do we need to bring to a beach clean?

It's always a good idea to have your own reusable protective gloves for beach cleaning. Organisers may have some spare to lend out.

Always bring a bottle of water (reusable is best of course!) and wear sturdy footwear to protect your feet. Also wear suitable clothing for the weather - a hat/sunglasses/raincoat/warm jumper etc.

If it's a Marine Conservation Society beach clean then there will be full details online, including the option to register for the event so the organiser knows you're joining in!

Q Do I have to take part in the actual beach survey if there is one?

In short, no you don't have to, but it is really helpful if people can.

Some beach cleans include a survey of the litter picked up from a specified area of beach. This data provides information to the organisation (eg the Marine Conservation Society), so they can produce a report and compare litter trends around the country and worldwide. The data also helps the organisations back up their campaigns to prevent litter at source, so it's an important part of a beach clean.

Q Can I advertise my own organised litter pick event on the facebook page?

Yes please do! It's free!

The page was set up with the aim to cultivate a community of beach/river cleaning volunteers and organisers, so if you have an event please share it on our page and tag @essexbeachcleans in any instagram posts so we can find and repost your event advert!

Q How do I find out what beach cleans are happening near me?

You can look on our facebook page at our events line-up, also look at our posts for more events.

Also you can go to the marine conservation society website and see all the beach cleans being organised around the country https://www.mcsuk.org/beachwatch/events why not join one on holiday and meet the locals!
