Special constables put in over 4,617 hours – over six months – of voluntary time with Essex Police during December.

Over the month, the 191 ‘specials’ made 24 arrests and responded to 905 incidents – including traffic incidents, helping people with mental health issues, reports of domestic abuse, and working with crime victims.  They also attended 24 incidents where weapons were reported. Nearly 1,900 hours were spent on patrol in local communities.

The volunteer officers have the same police powers, uniforms, and equipment as regular police officers, but don’t get paid. “Their support is invaluable and allows us to help even more people across Essex, and make sure those intent on committing crime or causing harm to our communities are caught,” said Essex Police.
