Gym plan approved for Harbour Square, Brightlingsea

A plan to convert part of an empty unit to a gym in Brightlingsea’s Harbour Square has been approved by Tendring Council.

The unit, 2a, is on the corner of the alley leading from Waterside to the Square, adjacent to the recently-opened Waterfront venue and in the same row as the 1 Harbour Square wine bar. It had planning permission for restaurant use.

The applicants operate Vital Excercise, a personal training business with a studio in Brantham, and say that the new studio will be open to customers by appointment only, reducing possible disturbance to residents. The planning approval allows the business to open between 7.30am and 9pm seven days a week and the applicants stated that any music played would not be “above an acceptable limit”.

Two objections were received from nearby residents, both of which were concerned about possible noise disturbance and asked that suitable sound proofing be installed. A condition of the planning permission requires that a formal noise impact assessment is undertaken before any air conditioning units and ventilation systems are installed so that they “will not cause unreasonable interference with the use and enjoyment of existing and future residential systems”.
