Ghostly tales at WinterFest event in Brightlingsea Museum

Essex storyteller and author Jan Williams will be bringing spooky goings-on to Brightlingsea Museum this weekend, as it opens its doors for the Brightlingsea WinterFest.

Jan will be launching her new book, The Ghost of Pendlesham Priory, at the museum on Saturday (March 5) as part of  the annual festival of music, arts and spoken word. The day after, residents are urged to come to the museum to tell their own ghost stories, especially if they have a local connection.

Brightlingsea resident Jan writes on a range of subjects, particularly folk tales, history and witchcraft. “I am so excited to have my book launch for the story of the ghost of Pendlesham Priory in my own home town of Brightlingsea in its lovely museum,” said Jan. “Peter Reilly [who’s run local ghost walks] will be joining me on the Sunday and we are looking forward to hearing people’s ghost stories, especially the ones  in Brightlingsea.” The book is illustrated by local artist Simon Peecock.

Jan’s new novel features a ghost called Isabel who reveals herself to modern children, showing what life was like in a convent threatened by Henry VIII. “There is nothing I love more creating pictures of the past and the reign of Henry VIII is my favourite period,” she said.

As well as the book launch and ghost stories, there will be lots of activities and also refreshments on offer at the museum, which will be open from 10.30 am to 1.00pm on both days. For more details about WinterFest visit www.brightlingseawinterfest.co.uk
