Crabbing in Brightlingsea - allowed agin from July 19

Crabbing can take place on Town Jetty from Monday

Crabbing can take place on the Brightlingsea’s Town Jetty from Monday when Covid-19 restrictions are lifted.

The traditional activity - popular with visitors and residents for generations - has been banned for months while restrictions were in place covering the size of groups able to meet outdoors.

At last night’s meeting (July 15) of Brightlingsea Town Council, a request from the town’s Harbour Commissioners to allow crabbing to recommence was approved unanimously.

However, the numbers of crabbers will still be managed by harbour staff for safety reasons, mainly so that large numbers of people don’t gather in one place on the floating jetty. In addition, people will still be encouraged to maintain social distancing and follow these guidelines:

  • Wear a face covering where you come into contact with people you don’t normally meet in enclosed and crowded spaces.
  • Wash your hands with soap and water or use hand sanitiser regularly throughout the day.
  • Cover your nose and mouth when you cough and sneeze.
  • Stay at home if unwell, to reduce the risk of passing on other illnesses onto friends, family, colleagues, and others in the  community.
  • Consider individual risks, such as clinical vulnerabilities and vaccination status
