Council plans four-day Platinum Jubilee celebration
Brightlingsea Town Council is promising "the weekend of a lifetime for the whole community" with a series of events to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in June.
The council has pledged £10,000 seed funding for celebrations to mark the Queen's 70 years on the throne, many of which will be based in and around a marquee on the Western Promenade. The marquee will have space for up to 250 diners, a dance floor, kitchen and toilets, and can be divided up so that it can be used for more than one event at the same time.
Events proposed for the four-day holiday include: beacon lighting with a mayor's reception and dancing on June 2; afternoon tea followed by a gala ball with the Sweeting Swing Band on June 3; family entertainment on June 4; and a family lunch and afternoon tea dance on June 5.
Two public meetings have been held to seek ideas for events from the Brightlingsea community and the council says that the marquee will be available for use by other town organisations. The council is also planning to publish a souvenir programme listing all the events taking place in the town.
