Community quilt demonstrates community links during lockdown

A quilt comprising 77 squares made by Brightlingsea residents, groups and organisations during lockdown has been unveiled at the town’s museum.

The aptly-named Stitching the Community Together quilt is the result of a call to the people of Brightlingsea to record and reflect on their experiences, activities, and feelings as they went lockdown. As well as individuals, Brightlingsea Primary School and Nursery and the Lido Team were among those contributing the 30cm squares.

On Saturday, October 23, the exhibition at the museum in Station Road was opened by former town doctor Mike Hare, who described the quilt’s patches as being “full of love and each so different, now connected together representing the links we have in the community”.

The squares were co-ordinated by Florence Peecock, with help from Hannah Redfearn and Anna de Wolf Evans, and sewn together by Vikki Walsh.

The colourful quilt now adorns a wall in the museum, where it can be seen every weekend until Christmas. Opening hours are Saturday 10am to 4pm and Sundays 2-5pm.  For more information go to: www.brightlingseamuseum.co.uk
