A developer has won his bid to build four new bungalows with garages on land in Brightlingsea.
South East Developments put in the application for the properties on the site in the back gardens of Homefield and Field House in Church Road.
The scheme includes a new access running between the two homes at the front and leading to a turning head.
Tendring District Council (TDC) refused planning permission last year as it felt it was unacceptable backland development.
South East Developments appealed against the decision in an effort to have it reversed and Government Inspector Jonathan Price has found in their favour. The firm also asked for costs but they were not awarded.
Mr Price said that there would be social, economic and environmental benefits from the scheme which he considered to be a sustainable development
“There would be limited harm caused to the character and appearance of the area and a moderate amount of harm to the present living conditions of the occupiers of Homefield,” he added.
“These adverse impacts would not significantly and demonstrably outweigh the benefits.”
