The penultimate stage of the Women’s Tour – one of the most prestigious cycling races on the international women’s circuit – will pass Brightlingsea when it returns to Essex in October.
The fifth stage of the Tour, scheduled to start on October 8, will see cyclists leave the Northern Gateway Sports Park in Colchester and head for Elmstead Market before taking on two-rounds of a circuit that will start on the B1027 near Wivenhoe Football Club then pass through Thorrington Cross, Jaywick, Thorpe-le-Soken, Manningtree and Lawford before finishing on Marine Parade West in Clacton.
The Tour first visited Clacton in 2014 and returned in 2015. According to the organisers, the 2019 race was worth over £7.5m to the UK economy, attracted 300k roadside spectators and over two million TV viewers. This year The Women’s Tour and British Cycling have teamed up to launch Ride for Heroes which will celebrate Britain’s key workers and community heroes. Each stage start and finish venue will play host to a special ride-out to give spectators their chance to say thank you to the unsung heroes of the COVID-19 pandemic.
