Storm Eunice has caused thousands of pounds worth of damage to Brightlingsea Regent’s football ground – and has launched an appeal for donations to make good.
The damage forced the cancellation of the team’s home game against Folkestone Invicta on Saturday, February 19, but a huge effort from the club and supporters saw the ground made safe in time for a Velocity Cup match against Haringey Borough on three days later.
Strong winds snapped fence posts, flattened fence panels and the club’s Tannoy system – installed last year at a cost of £6,000 – suffered around £600 worth of damage. Club chairman Terry Doherty said he was “distraught” when he saw the damage, but thanks all the volunteers who helped to make the ground safe.
The North Road-based club has launched a Gofundme campaign to raise money to pay for the repairs. At the time of writing, just over £2,000 had been donated.
