The demolition of former care home Well House in Chestnut Way, Brightlingsea – is well under way.
Tendring District Council (TDC) granted outline planning permission last summer to Westcliff-based Essex County Care for a new 64-bedroom care home to replace the old 43-bedroom home, which was said by the owners to have had “excessively high” energy consumption heating and heating costs.
When it closed in 2018, Well House was said to have required than £2m to modernise it. It was also said to be affected by subsidence caused by the site’s many mature trees, which were were subsequently felled.
When outline permission was granted, planners said that no building work could commence on the new home until a series of “reserved matters” have been approved by planners. These include conditions relating to the access, appearance, landscaping, layout and scale of the proposed two-storey building.
When the original application was submitted at the beginning of 2022, Brightlingsea Town Council said the plans were inaccurate but at the time of writing, TDC’s planning portal shows that no new plans have been submitted and that full permission has not been granted.
