Grey skies and strong winds didn’t deter Brightlingsea residents from turning out for a service of commemoration and thanksgiving for the life of Queen Elizabeth II on Sunday, September 18.
The service began with a procession from St James’ church to the Memorial Gardens featuring representatives of local church, civic and community organisations and music was provided by a combined choir made up of members of Women in Harmony and the St James’ Singers.
Local MP Sir Bernard Jenkin was among the congregation and after the service he met young members of the Church Lads and Girls’ Brigade and the Rainbows and viewed the town’s Book of Condolence. He praised the town’s community spirit and its “very moving” tribute to the late Queen.
“Brightlingsea has always been a small town with a big heart,” said Rev. Caroline Beckett, one of the organisers. “We have done the Queen’s memory honour and that is important. She lived a life of extraordinary, selfless service.”
