Community Speed Watch volunteers in Brightlingsea have clocked dozens of Brightlingsea drivers exceeding speed limits around the town.
During their latest session on Samsons Road – where there’s a 30mph limit – one driver was recorded driving at 47mph, and another 13 were monitored at 37mph or more in the space of an hour.
“This is despite us recently requesting and getting a new 30mph sign at the top of the road to remind everyone of the limit,” said Speed Watch volunteer Mat Court.
Under the community speed watch scheme, drivers caught speeding are not prosecuted, but are instead sent an advisory letter with the aim of educating them into better driving habits. The scheme also helps police to better allocate resources and monitor areas where there may be road safety issues.
Tjhe Brightlingsea group is looking for more volunteers to help with roadside monitoring sessions, compiling reports for the police, helping with communications and general organisation. If you’re interested, email speed@ourbrightlingsea.org.uk.
