Brightlingsea Rotary Club is working with a Colchester-based charity to send unwanted bicyles to Africa.
The Re-Cycle charity provides its partner organisations in Africa with bicyles, spare parts and tools, along with training for bike mechanics.
Bikes are sold locally, so that existing retailers aren’t affected by unfair competition, and the money is used to fund work and other social enterprises.
On Saturday, May 11, Rotarians will be manning a pop-up collection point from 10am – 1pm in the car park behind the Parish Hall in Victoria Place. From there, the bikes will be taken to the charity’s workshops to be prepared for shipping to Africa or, if not suitable, stripped for parts or refurbished and sold on in the UK.
Re-Cycle has been operating since 1998 and has over 90 collection points across the UK. Around 500 bikes can be fitted in to shipping container.
