Which historic buildings, monuments and heritage sites in Brightlingsea and the Tendring district matter most to you?
Tendring District Council (TDC) is preparing a list of sites that are important to local people but which don’t necessarily meet the specifications for official listing as heritage assets.
The council has now set up a Local Heritage List and begun a six-month ‘Call for Heritage Sites’ public consultation, the start of which has yet to be announced.
“Non-designated heritage assets are buildings, monuments, sites, places, areas or landscapes that are identified as having a degree of heritage significance, meriting consideration in planning decisions, but which do not meet the criteria for designated heritage assets,” said TDC leader Mark Stephenson.
“For example, war memorials or other structures considered to be of local significance could be submitted for inclusion on the Local List.”
The council has also adopted the first seven of 20 planned Conservation Area Appraisals and Management Plans, one of which covers Brightlingsea. The council says the plans form part of a defence against speculative planning applications.
