Tendring District Council (TDC) could be set to bring in a private company to run its Careline service, which helps people to remain independent in their own homes.
Currently 1,859 people use the 24/7 service, which supplies fall bracelets, watches and pendants, and lifting services. Careline also runs TDC’s out-of-hours capabilities and CCTV control centre, which supports services such as emergency planning, environmental health and housing
However following what it says is a year-long ‘deep dive’ review, the council’s cabinet has agreed to hold a public consultation over the future of the service. Its preferred option is for the council to cease the telecare and lifting/response provision, but continue to provide the CCTV and out-of-hours provision.
Gina Placey, TDC portfolio holder for partnerships, said: “Since Careline was launched almost 40 years ago the telecare landscape has changed significantly. There are now a number of alternative providers in what is a competitive market – one that the council is not necessarily best placed to be in.”
She added: “This decision is not just about finances, but about what is best for customers – there are many other providers out there, including some lower cost options.”
Should the council decide to change provider – possibly by the end of March 2025 – it says that up to £300,000 will be available to help customers move to an alternative provider of their choice, with support available. It has also committed to taking “every action to prevent compulsory redundancies, which would only be a last resort”.
